AI and Machine Learning for Beginners: A Step-by-Step Learning Roadmap
A beginner-friendly roadmap to learn artificial intelligence and machine learning: Python, maths, ML algorithms, deep learning, GenAI and projects.
Artificial intelligence and machine learning can seem overwhelming at first, but the learning path is clear when you take it one step at a time. You do not need a PhD. You need a structured plan, steady practice and real projects.
Step 1: Learn Python
Python is the main language for AI. Focus on basics, functions and working with data using libraries such as NumPy and Pandas.
Step 2: Build the maths foundation
Learn the essentials of statistics, probability and linear algebra. You only need enough to understand how models learn and how to judge their results.
Step 3: Machine learning
Learn supervised learning (regression and classification), unsupervised learning (clustering) and how to evaluate models. Practise with scikit-learn on real datasets.
Step 4: Deep learning
Move on to neural networks with TensorFlow or PyTorch, including models for images (CNNs) and text (transformers).
Step 5: Generative AI and agents
Today's most in-demand skills build on these foundations: working with large language models, prompt engineering, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and AI agents.
Step 6: Build projects
- A price or sales prediction model
- An image classifier
- A chatbot that answers questions from your own documents
Projects like these show employers what you can actually build.
Career roles
This roadmap leads to roles such as AI associate, machine learning engineer, data scientist, GenAI developer and AI agent developer.
Start with The Interface's AI & Machine Learning Fundamentals course, then move to Machine Learning with Python or Generative AI Application Development.
